NAA’s work on the Coniston copper mines has been featured in the January 2020 edition of Cumbria Life! Pick up your own copy to read a little bit about NAA’s award-winning work centred on these magnificent structures!
The article discusses the mines’ more-recent history, such as an attempt to landscape the old mining and quarrying remains in the 1970s. The archaeological works at the mines brought about a huge amount of public interest and have certainly contributed to changing attitudes towards these standing monuments to our industrial past.
Much of the archaeological work was conducted by volunteers under the supervision of NAA’s Kate Chapman and Penny Middleton. Our work at Coniston copper mines and Penny Rigg won the prestigious ‘Archaeological Report Award’ at the Association for Industrial Archaeology Awards.
