Dave Fell and Stuart Ross presented NAA’s work on the A1 upgrade scheme at last weekend’s Romans in North-East England Conference hosted by the Royal Archaeological Institute and Roman Society at Senate House in London.

We received a great response from the diverse range of delegates, particularly the following encouraging feedback from some senior academics.

Dr Pete Wilson (Hon Sec Royal Archaeological Institute)

“…thank you both for your time and the effort that you put into producing two excellent and well-received papers. Between them they demonstrated the importance of development-led archaeology to our developing understanding of our collective past.”

Professor Ian Haynes (Newcastle University)

“…the work is outstanding, deeply impressive and a game changer.”

Professor Martin Millett (University of Cambridge)

“…it was very clear to me that the work NAA has been doing on the A1 project has immense and long-term importance for our understanding of not only the NE region, but Roman Britain as a whole. Your presentations on the work at Scotch Corner and Catterick were both excellent and you communicated the work to academics and the wider audience exceedingly well.”

Professor Colin Haselgrove (University of Leicester)

“…both NAA presentations were excellent and both monographs are eagerly awaited.”

We are extremely grateful to organisers from the Royal Archaeological Institute and Roman Society for our invitation and reception – the variety of presentations offered a wealth of information on the research themes we are exploring. It was fantastic to be a part of such a vibrant event.

You can read more about findings from the A1 scheme in our monographs, A Roman Roadside Settlement at Healam Bridge: The Iron Age to Early Medieval Evidence and Death Burial and Identity: 3000 Years of Death in the Vale of Mowbray, which can be downloaded from the archaeology data service repository.

The Scotch Corner monograph (Contact, Concord and Conquest: Britons and Romans at Scotch Corner) will be available as a free downloadable Pdf by summer 2020, and Cataractonium: Establishment, Consolidation and Retreat will be available in 2021.
