To celebrate Easter, we have two sherds of Roman samian ware to share that display images of hares/rabbits. Samian was a type of fine pottery used throughout the Roman Empire as tableware. Although it was of high quality, its use was common, and so we often find in the archaeological record. Examples recovered often have decoration, depicting images of flowers, gladiators, mythical beasts and indigenous animals such as the examples displayed here. These two sherds were recovered in northern Britain but were likely produced and imported from Gaul—modern day France—which is just a short hop across the Channel!
